Who qualifies for Personal Umbrella Policy (PUP) coverage?

The following risks are unacceptable:

  1. Households not in the United States.
  2. Households unwilling to maintain minimum underlying insurance policies as outlined on the RLI application for all personal exposures including automobile liability, homeowners or personal liability, farm owners or farm comprehensive personal liability, unlicensed recreational vehicle, and watercraft liability.
  3. If the insured or any member of the household have an occupation as a professional entertainer or athlete, media personality or an appointed or elected federal or state political figure. (N/A for political figures in FL, OR and TX.).
  4. The insured or any member of the household:
    1. Own, lease or regularly operate more than six vehicles. (Antique/Collector vehicle are counted separately),
    2. Own and/or rent more than six residential properties
    3. Own or regularly operate more then three watercraft (that are between 14 and 45 feet and/or maximum speeds less than 51 MPH) (Personal Watercraft are counted separately),
    4. Own or regularly operate no more than three personal watercrafts (PWCs),
    5. Licensed less than one year, currently have a learner’s permit and/or have a non-U.S. driver’s license,
    6. With a citation/conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, careless driving or negligent driving and/or had a driver’s license suspended, revoked in the past five years,
    7. With one driver having more than three moving violations in the past three years.
    8. With any personal liabilty or personal bodily injury liability claims exceeding $25,000 in the last five years.
  5. Households with:
    1. More than six drivers,
    2. More than a combined four moving violations within the last three years,
    3. More than four drivers over the age of 70,
    4. More than four drivers under the age of 22,
    5. Any driver under the age of 22 or over the age of 79 with any driving incident within the past three years,
    6. A combination of more than two at-fault accidents in the last three years.

If any household risk meets one or more of the unacceptable risks, RLI’s Personal Umbrella Policy may not be available. However, if the risk meets RLI’s requirements, it’s easy to get an RLI Personal Umbrella Policy. Begin by contacting RLI or by completing the form below. The information you supply will be given to a program administrator, authorized to do business in your state, who will get back in touch with you to determine final eligibility. An RLI application must be submitted and approved to ensure final eligibility.
